CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS, SURGICAL MANAGEMENT, AND OUTCOMES OF SYMPTOMATIC CHOLELITHIASIS

Background: Symptomatic cholelithiasis is one of the most common benign pathological conditions encountered in general surgery and a leading indication for elective and emergency abdominal operations. Objective: To analyze the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, surgical management, and postoperative outcomes of patients treated for symptomatic gallstone disease at FMIOPH Clinics. Methods: A prospective observational study was conducted on 112 patients diagnosed with symptomatic cholelithiasis who underwent surgical treatment. Demographic data, clinical features, imaging findings, operative approach, and postoperative outcomes were evaluated. Results: The disease predominantly affected middle-aged females. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy was the most frequently performed procedure and was associated with shorter hospital stay and lower postoperative morbidity compared with open surgery. Conclusion: Symptomatic cholelithiasis remains a highly prevalent surgical condition. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy provides excellent clinical outcomes and should be considered the standard treatment modality in the absence of contraindications.
