ASSESSMENT OF MEDICAL STUDENTS ON SURGICAL SKILLS USING SIMULATION-BASED LEARNING

Abstract

Background: Simulation-based learning (SBL) may improve basic operative readiness before patient contact. Objective: To compare OSCE-measured surgical skills of fifth-year medical students from two institutions after SBL. Methods: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at the Fergana Medical Institute of Public Health (n=258) and Andijan State Medical Institute (n=152). Students were mentally and physically healthy and unaware of marking criteria. A 6-station OSCE (asepsis, instrument handling, suturing/knot tying, IV cannulation, urinary catheterization, and wound dressing) used checklists and global ratings. Results: Mean total OSCE scores were higher at Fergana (78.4±9.6) than Andijan (72.1±10.8; p<0.001); pass rates were 79% vs 62%. Conclusion: Standardized SBL with OSCE assessment differentiated performance between affiliations and identified station-specific gaps for targeted remediation with high reliability.
