FUNCTIONAL ENDOSCOPIC SINUS SURGERY OUTCOMES IN CHRONIC RHINOSINUSITIS: A PROSPECTIVE CLINICAL STUDY

Abstract

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a long-standing inflammatory condition of the sinonasal mucosa that markedly impairs patients’ quality of life. When conservative medical treatment proves ineffective, functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is commonly recommended. Objective: The present study evaluated both clinical and endoscopic results of FESS in patients with CRS unresponsive to medical therapy. Methods: Adult patients diagnosed with CRS and scheduled for FESS were prospectively assessed using nasal endoscopy, computed tomography (CT) scoring, and the Sinonasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) prior to surgery and during a 12-month postoperative follow-up period. Results: A significant reduction in symptom severity and clear improvement in endoscopic findings were observed following FESS. Patients with and without nasal polyps achieved clinically meaningful benefits, while complication and revision surgery rates remained low. Superior outcomes were associated with consistent postoperative treatment adherence and the absence of asthma. Conclusion: FESS represents a safe and effective therapeutic option for refractory CRS, offering durable symptom improvement and enhanced sinonasal function.
