Abstract

English proficiency has become essential for Uzbek medical students to access international literature and participate in global medical practice, yet many enter university with limited skills in reading and understanding specialized texts. This study evaluated the impact of an integrated English for Medical Purposes (EMP) module, combining explicit grammar teaching, medical vocabulary instruction, extensive reading, and communicative tasks, on first‑ and second‑year medical students' reading proficiency at a Tashkent medical university. A quasi‑experimental pre‑test/post‑test design compared an intervention group (n=64) receiving the integrated EMP module with a control group (n=62) following the standard general English syllabus over one semester. Reading comprehension tests based on authentic medical articles and a self‑report questionnaire on reading strategies and confidence were administered at baseline and after 16 weeks.
